# Lifecycle

> Statuses, snoozing, scheduled notes and the inbox rule that decides which postas you see.

## Statuses

| Status | Meaning | Counts as pending |
| - | - | - |
| `open` | New, not read yet | Yes |
| `seen` | Read in full with `get_posta` | Yes |
| `accepted` | The recipient took it on | Yes |
| `blocked` | The recipient can't move forward | Yes |
| `done` | Finished | No |
| `dismissed` | Not going to happen | No |

* **Only the recipient changes a posta's status.** For a note, that's you. For a handoff you sent, it's the other person.
* Any status can change to any other, including back to `open`.
* Reading a thread with `get_posta` marks every posta in it that is addressed to you and still `open` as `seen`. Listing the inbox never marks anything.
* Every change is recorded in an append-only event log.

## Snoozing

`update_status` with `snooze_until` hides a posta from the inbox until that date, without changing its status. Snoozed postas appear again by themselves once the date passes.

## When a posta shows up

Notes take a `surface` option. Handoffs and replies always use `next_open`.

| Mode | Behavior today |
| - | - |
| `next_open` (default) | In the inbox right away. |
| `now` | In the inbox right away. |
| `at` | Hidden until the given date, then in the inbox. Requires `surface.at`. |
| `project_open` | In the inbox right away; the [Claude Code hook](/guides/session-start-hook.md) shows it in sessions of that project. Requires `project`. |

> [!NOTE]
>
> `now`, `next_open` and `project_open` are stored separately because the upcoming Mac and iPhone apps will treat them differently (stickies, notifications). Today only `at` changes when a posta appears.

## Dates

Every date a tool accepts must be **ISO 8601 with an explicit UTC offset**, in the user's local time:

```text theme={null}
2026-10-22T09:00:00-03:00
```

A date without an offset is rejected with an example, so a missing time zone never shifts a reminder by hours. Scheduled and snooze dates must be in the future and at most 180 days away. LePosta shows dates back in your time zone, with relative times such as *2h ago*.

## The inbox rule

Your inbox is every posta addressed to you that:

1. is in a pending status (`open`, `seen`, `accepted` or `blocked`),
2. is not snoozed into the future, and
3. if it was scheduled with `at`, has reached its date.

`list_inbox` can add finished postas (`include_done`) or upcoming ones (`include_upcoming`), and filter by `project`. Results are newest first.
